KILDORRERY 3-13 GLANMIRE 1-14

The adage “ goals win matches” certainly rang true for our Intermediate footballers, in the opening round of the Co. championship, at Castlelyons, last Sunday afternoon. From the throw-in, Kildorrery took this game by the scruff of the neck. Eventhough, Glanmire had sent over their first point within thirty seconds, Kildorrery, from the resultant kick-out won possession and after great work by Peter O’Brien, Tom Monaghan had the ball in the Glanmire net within the next minute. Shane O’Neill added a point before Glanmire had their second point. A quick reply by James O’Sullivan had Kildorrery 1-2 to 0-2 ahead after only four minutes of play. The losers had reduced their deficit to two points before Finbarr Stapleton finished another Kildorrery move with a goal in the tenth minute. However, this was negatived by Glanmire’s goal in the thirteenth minute. At the end of the first quarter, only a point separated the sides 2-2 to 1-4.

For the next ten minutes or so, Glanmire came more into the game, controlling the middle third. Kildorrery did have a point from a Shane O’Neill free, but the Glanmire men had pushed into 1-8 to 2-3 lead before a Kildorrery raid yielded a penalty which Dave Kelly duly converted in the twenty-fifth minute. Shane Fitzgerald, Tom Monaghan and Peter O’Brien contributed points before the end of the half while their opponents could only manage a point in injury time. At the break it was Kildorrery 3-6 Glanmire 1-9. After the restart, Glanmire, as in the opening half, were first to score when they pointed a free. But, it mattered little, because Kildorrery had stretched their lead to 3-9 to 1-10 by the three-quarter hour mark. They added four more to Glanmire’s three inside the final quarter to run out deserving winners on the above score.

This was a heart-warming performance from our boys all of whom displayed grit and determination throughout and reaped their just reward. We congratulate them and their management team on a well-deserved victory and look forward to their progress in the championship.
