Our Club hosted 2016 Co. Champions, Bandon, last Sunday afternoon where they defeated our Intermediate footballers in the opening round of the Division 4 league. Kildorrery were forced to line out without Sean Kelly, Andrew O’Brien, Wm Fouhy, Eamonn O’Connor and James McEniry of last year’s championship side, all of whom were unavailable through injury or for personal reasons. However, the selectors Tony McCarthy and Pa Walsh mustered the best panel available to them. While they gave of their best they were unable to contain the visitors’ effort and lost on the final score-line of 0-11 to 1-14.

The game was played in a swirling wind which aided Bandon in the opening half, at the end of which they led 1-10 to 0-4. Were it not for a fine save by Liam Kelly just at the end of the first quarter the gap would have been greater at the break. As it was, the winners led 1-10 to 0-4 at this juncture. After the restart, it took Kildorrery, now aided by the wind, five minutes to raise a flag, when Jamie O’Gorman sent over a point. Bandon, replied with two quick points before Shane O’Neill had two on the trot. Again, Bandon replied before James O’Sullivan again reduced the deficit at the end of the third quarter. Peter O’Brien, Stevie Coughlan and Shane O’Neill completed Kildorrery’s scoring inside the last quarter, while the winners added a point to their tally in the same period.

Team and scorers: Liam Kelly, Cormac O’Baoill, Fintan Daly, Darren McNamara, James O’Sullivan 0-3, Michael Walsh, Dylan Kent, Finbarr Stapleton, Shane Fitzgerald 0-1, Tom Monaghan, Peter O’Brien 0-1, Jamie O’Gorman 0-1, Shane O’Neill 0-4 (0-3fs), Stevie Coughlan 0-1, David Kelly. Subs used. Willie Coffey, P.J.Keating and James Fox.
