Congrats to our Junior girls

Kildorrery 8-12 Brian Dillons 3-05

On Monday night last the 27th of June our Girls faced Brian Dillons in the final of the 2022 Junior 13 a side County League Final on the Hallowed camogie grounds of Castle Road. We came into the final with a 100% record.

Kildorrery played with the aid of a very strong breeze in the first half. From the outset we attacked very strongly and set the tone for the rest of the game. We scored 3-05 before Brian Dillons registered their first score and at half time we lead by 4-07 to 1-01. Despite the scoreboard our backs and midfield did Trojan work in this half and Laura Nolan in Goals was in fine form to preserve our lead for the second half.

We knew we had a big 30 minutes ahead of us facing into a strong wind and against a very strong and physical Brian Dillons side. For the first 10 minutes of the second half Brian Dillons threw everything they had at Kildorrery and racked up a few scores. Our backs and midfield were under huge pressure but really showed their character. We then started to settle and got more ball to our forwards and that’s when our younger girls really came to life. Suddenly Kildorrery were finding oceans of space and our girls showed how clinical they can be when given half a chance. Against a very strong breeze we outscored Brian Dillons by 4-05 to 2-04 in the second half.

Laura Hanley in goals was solid as a rock all through and her shot stopping and puck outs were immense. The Enforcers Sharon Coughlan and Orla McEnaney in the full back line really stood firm when the pressure was on. That’s a line Thou Shalt Not Pass. Elaine O’Connor at centre back was a colossus. Niamh Ni Fhearghail and Ellen Barry-Lynes on the wings swept up everything that came their way. To concede only 8 scores in an hour of Camogie was a great day out for any back line.

At Midfield Fiona o Flynn started off like a girl who was starved of Hurling. She had an absolutely storming first half and her midfield partner Judy McCarthy put on an exhibition of hooking, blocking and hard work that often gets unnoticed but really laid down a marker of what this team are about.

Sally McCarthy at Centre forward tormented the Brian Dillons backs all night and they really had no answer to her class. At wing forward we had Aoife Noonan who caused huge damage when carrying the ball and Kaylaigh Barry who really stood up and was counted in the first 10 minutes of the second half when we were under huge pressure.

In the Full forward line Orlaith Quaid was like a General organising all the girls and bringing everything together. Ciara Palmer came storming into the game in the second half and broke Brian Dillons hearts by banging in 3 goals in that half. Nicole Cahill came on for Ciara Palmer in the second half and is showing great promise for a girl who only started playing Camogie this year.

A mention must go out to Mairead Foley, Aine Keating, Isabelle Kennerley and Aoife Hennessy who were unavailable for selection but have contributed greatly to a great season so far. These girls will be back for the championship which will give the management huge headaches when selecting a team.

First year back playing Camogie at adult level in Kildorrery for a few years and what a way to get back into the game. Thanks to all the support who travelled and here’s looking forward to a great championship.

Team and scorers: Laura Hanley, Sharon Coughlan, Orla McEnaney, Niamh Ni Fhearghail, Elaine O’Connor, Ellen Barry-Lynes, Fiona O Flynn, Judy McCarthy, Aoife Noonan (2-01), Sally McCarthy (0-06, 2f), Kaylaigh Barry, Orlaith Quaid (2-01), Ciara Palmer (4-02). Subs Nicole Cahill for Ciara palmer.
