KILDORRERY 1-7  BLACKWATER ROVERS 0-9

As in their opening round game, our Under 21B football selectors just managed to muster fifteen players for this loser’s group game at the home venue, last Sunday mid-day. And if that was not bad enough they had to play ten minutes of the first half and twenty five minutes of the second half with only fourteen players after Cathal Walsh-O’Grady was forced off with a shoulder injury.  However, they did manage to scrape a win by the minimum.

From the throw-in, ten minutes had elapsed before the first flag was raised, when Shane Landers sent over the first point of his personal tally of 1-2. Shane O’Neill followed with a point from a free, before Rovers opened their account from a placed ball. Both sides were guilty of poor finishing on too many occasions in this opening half. At the break, Kildorrery led 0-5 to 0-2.

After the restart, both sides were slow to find their range, but the visitors pulled back a point in the thirty sixth minute, but this was quickly negatived by Shane Landers’ goal after a great run out of defence by Dylan Kent. Again, Rovers reduced their deficit with two points, one from a free. Shane Landers had  his  second point just before the end of the third quarter, to leave Kildorrrery ahead 1-6 to 0-6 at this point.

Kildorrery went through a scoreless sixteen minutes or so, while their opponents clawed away at the difference. With just two minutes of normal time remaining, Kildorrery were 1-6 to 0-8 in front. Shane O’Neill put two points between the teams, from a free but Blackwater Rovers forced a ‘45’ which they duly converted and this proved to be the last score of the game and victory for our boys which, considering their depletion, they well deserved.

This was a good spirited performance from this under-strength side and the win keeps them in the competition for the next round, when hopefully, they will have a larger panel.

Team and scorers:  Tony Watson, P.J.Keating, John Fitzgerald, Ian butler, Dylan Kent 0-1, Liam McGrath, Tiernan Condon, Shane Walsh 0-1, Darren McNamara, David Harrington, Shane Landers 1-2, P.J.Murphy, Cathal Walsh-O’Grady, Shane O’Neill 0-3(0-2fs), Padraig Walsh.
