A second North Cork championship in five days for our Club!  After our Junior B2 footballers’ victory over Buttevant, on the previous Sunday, our Under 21B hurlers with a great last quarter rally overcame a strong Ballyhea fifteen to emerge victorious by a single point on the score 2-15 to 3-11.  This was a well-deserved victory because after seventeen minutes of the second half, the writing looked to be on the wall for our boys when they trailed by seven points 1-9 to to 3-10. However, a minute later, a high speculative ball into the Ballyhea goal-mouth was expertly flicked to the net by Cathal Harrington. From the resultant puck-out Man of the Match, James Keating sent over a great point and the margin was down to three.  Spurred on by these scores, Kildorrery to a man, battled bravely and with four minutes of injury time played only a point separated the sides 2-14 to 3-11. The winning score came a minute later when Kildorrery were awarded a free in the middle of the field, which the ice-cool James sent straight over the middle of the bar. In the next passage of play Ballyhea were awarded a free which they failed to convert and the final whistle was blown and Kildorrery were crowned North Cork champions. They will now go on to play Ballygarvan in the County semi-final on Saturday next.

From the throw-in, Kildorrery raised the first flag when Cathal Harrington had a point from a free in the third minute, but Ballyhea replied with their first goal a minute later and added two more points from frees before a Kildorrery attack yielded a ‘65’ which James Keating sent over for a point. At the end of the first quarter it was 0-2 to 1-2.  Ballyhea from a free extended their lead before a great upfield movement involving James Keating and Dylan Kent was finished with a well-taken goal from Kevin Noonan after nineteen minutes. For the remainder of the half including three minutes of injury time, the sides had three points each, all of Kildorrery’s coming from placed balls, two from James and one from Cathal. At the break, the losers led by the minimum 1-6 to 1-5.

Three minutes into the second half, P.J.Keating with a point from play, levelled matters. Again, Ballyhea struck for a goal, in the 38th minute to which Cathal (free) and Shane O’Neill replied with points. By the end of the third quarter Ballyhea led 2-8 to 1-9 and with their third goal, a minute into the last quarter followed by two quick points looked as if they were home and dry. However, the afore-mentioned Cathal Harrington goal inspired our boys and they dug deep to force their opponents into the concession of frees and two ‘65s’, all of which produced points. Ballyhea’s last score came seven minutes from the end of normal time.

Once again, this was a great team effort with every player giving of his best and were it not for their do-or-die attitude this game might have gone the other way. Full marks to all the players and mentors Will Duggan, Dave Roche and Peter O’Brien and the best of luck in the Co. semi-final.

Despite a great second half recovery, our Minor B1 hurlers came up just one point short in this North Cork League final at Kilbrin, last Sunday afternoon. This was a remarkable achievement, considering they were ten points in arrears at the end of the first half, at which point the score-line read 0-6 to 0-16, due mainly to our concession of frees. They are to be commended for their determination and grit in the second half.  Well done!
