KILDORRERY 1-10  CASTLETOWNBERE 0-11

Last Sunday afternoon, at the home venue, our Intermediate footballers secured their first victory in the 2016 Division 3 league when they defeated their West Cork opponents, Castletownbere, on the above score.  The visitors, who had the advantage of the breeze in the opening half, dominated exchanges in the opening quarter and had five points on the board before Kildorrery opened their account, courtesy of a Tom Monaghan free in the fifteenth minute.

This appeared to be the spur Kildorrery needed and two minutes later, Finbarr Stapleton with a great run up the right wing, sent over another point. Further points from Shane O’Neill and Wm Fouhy saw the deficit reduced to the minimum, before David Kelly was brought down in the parallelogram and the same player tucked away the resultant penalty in the twenty-third minute.  He followed this with a point five minutes later.

Castletown reduced the margin to the minimum with two points inside the last four minutes of the half.  At the break it was Kildorrery 1-5 Castletownbere 0-7.

After the restart, James McEniry increased the home side’s lead with a point, within thirty seconds to which Castletown replied with a like score. Shane O’Neill and Andrew O’Brien (free), increased the advantage to three by the thirty seventh minute. Two losers’ raids yielded pointed frees and the they were only a point in arrears at the end of the third quarter, 0-10 to 1-8   Kildorrery added two more points per Peter O’Brien and James O’Sullivan in the remaining quarter while the visitors only managed a single point.

Once Kildorrery settled into this game they showed great spirit and determination in all sectors and were well worthy of their win.   On Sunday next, they are away to St.Michael’s and we hope they can continue on their winning way.
