Remembering Sonny
This week’s Monday meeting marked the passing of club legend Edward J. (Sonny) O’Dea. Sonny played on Avondhu GAA’s first County Senior hurling championship winning team of 1952 and also won 2 Dublin GAA Official hurling championships with New Irelands.
Sonny played in the 1952 Cork GAA County final v the_Barrs with his brother John also winning a County Senior medal with Avondhu’s next success in 1966. Sonny was part of Kildorrery’s first ever Avondhu GAA North Cork junior winning teams of 1962 and 1963
Including the famous ‘windy day’ success and played in an all family full back line with his brother John and Andrew. Sonny was always a great supporter of the club with links to the wider O’Dea and Fitzgerald families right through to the present day. Sonny although lived in Dublin for a very long time was immensely proud of his Kildorrery roots. He enjoyed our famous 2012 hurling campaign in particular and himself and his wife Bernie went to pairc ui rinn to support the team… on his last visit to Kildorrery with his family and grandchildren in October 2021 he inspected the pitch, loved looking at the old photos in the GAA hall, the gym, and was very proud to show his grandchildren his seat in the stand! Rest in Peace Sonny.
