Intermediate Hurlers Come Up Short Against Mayfield

Our intermediate hurlers took to the field last weekend in Intermediate hurling championship. This was an important fixture as we needed to cement our standing to progress further. With all teams out from the group after the weekend Mayfield and Blackrock share the summit on three points each while Sarsfields and Kildorrery have a point each. Blackrock got the better of Sars in Páirc Uí Rinn, 1-19 to 1-16 the score, while goals were key as Mayfield defeated us by 3-16 to 0-21. We were unable to find the net during the hour and this told at the end as James Bermingham referee blew just after Mayfield struck their third in the 61st minute when we had come very close to finding a score to draw.

The game started promising as we traded points with Mayfield through James Keating,a peter o brien brace of frees and luke keating also. After the first quarter Mayfield led four points to three and there was nothing between us. On the 19th minute Mayfield goaled and followed up with a point until Kieran hurley responded from Kildorrery. Tiernan pointed on the 22nd minute and three points traded each before half time meant that at half time we went in down by four points and not in the worst position.

After the resumption Mayfield goaled early and this put us under pressure for the remainder of the second half as we chased the lead. We had some good passages of play and peters free taking was extremely important with contributions from James Keating Dave Kelly. With 51 minutes on the clock the score line read seventeen points to two goals and fifteen. We dug in which was a great tribute to the team and when the score was twenty one points to two goals and sixteen there was hope that we would see it out and at least earn the draw. This was not to be and as the clock saw sixty minutes pass Mayfield were able to split our defence open again and get themselves in for their third goal. On the puck out the referee blew and we knew that the outcome was not in our favour.

The final round of this takes place on September 2nd. Kildorrery will play Blackrock and Sars will play Mayfield. If teams finish level, order is decided as follows: If 2 teams’ level on points its head to head. Otherwise if that is level e.g. both teams drew when they played or if more than 2 teams finish level on points then.Score Difference counts next. Then highest total score For and then potentially a play-off.

We need the win to have some chance of progression so hopefully we can get there.
