Heroic Kildorrery Comeback Falls Just Short in Under-14 Thriller
Kildorrery 5-7 (22) | Cobh 6-5(23)
Kildorrery’s Under-14 camogie team produced an incredibly brave second-half comeback against Cobh in Kildorrery Wednesday evening, falling agonisingly short by just one point after a thrilling and fiercely contested encounter.
Cobh made a blistering start, registering a goal and a point from play inside the opening minute. However, Kildorrery quickly settled into the game, opening their account with a point from a 45 after two and a half minutes. That score calmed the early nerves, and the girls soon added two excellent points from play.
Kildorrery raised their first green flag in the 11th minute, but Cobh responded with a goal less than a minute later. The action continued to flow from end to end, with Cobh capitalising on a number of opportunities towards the end of the half. Kildorrery added another well-taken point from a 45, leaving the half-time score Kildorrery 1-5 to Cobh 2-5
Despite trailing by nine points, the Kildorrery girls refused to be discouraged. Cobh again came flying out of the traps at the beginning of the second half, scoring a goal and a point within the opening 90 seconds. Many teams might have allowed their heads to drop, but this Kildorrery side possesses a remarkable never-say-die attitude.
They began to turn the game around approximately six minutes into the second half and had registered 1-2 within the opening 10 minutes. What followed was a gripping battle, with play moving rapidly up and down the field and both sides creating chances. The work rate, determination and commitment shown by the Kildorrery girls were phenomenal.
Kildorrery struck another goal in the 21st minute before producing an extraordinary late surge, finding the net three more times in the closing stages. Suddenly, a game that had appeared beyond their reach was back in the balance, with just one point separating the teams.
Unfortunately, the clock was against Kildorrery, and Cobh held on to claim a narrow 6-5 to 5-7 victory.
Although the result did not go their way, this was an unbelievably heroic performance from the entire Kildorrery panel. In a tough and highly physical contest, the girls battled courageously until the final whistle.
With a number of players unavailable through injury and holidays, several members of our Under-12 panel stepped up to support the team. A huge thank you to those girls for making themselves available and for the fantastic commitment, work rate and performances they delivered on the evening. We are often caught for numbers, and their willingness to help the Under-14 team was greatly appreciated.
Every member of the panel played her part and demonstrated tremendous heart, resilience and pride in the jersey. The girls may have fallen one point short on the scoreboard, but they can be extremely proud of a performance that showed the true character and fighting spirit of this Under-14 team.
