Intermediate Hurling League – Round 5

Kildorrery 1-20, Watergrasshill 2-18

Kildorrery locked horns with Watergrasshill in Round Five of the Intermediate Hurling League, knowing they faced a serious test against a seasoned senior outfit. Despite that expectation, our first-half performance defied the odds and produced a scintillating display of attacking hurling that had the travelling Kildorrery supporters thoroughly entertained.

From the throw-in, it was clear Kildorrery had come to play. The trio of Luke, James, and Peter were immense, exerting huge influence on the game and proving unerring in front of the posts. All three had registered points inside the opening four minutes, setting the tone early before Watergrasshill replied with a pair of points from placed balls.

Luke and Dylan responded with magnificent long-range efforts from centre-back, before Watergrasshill pointed again. Luke then added two more points, one from a free, as Kildorrery continued to dominate possession and territory.

The game’s standout moment arrived in the 17th minute. Cian Coughlan, having gathered a perfectly weighted low ball, drove directly at the defence before unleashing a superb strike to the net. It was a goal of real quality and one worthy of any stage.

Peter added another point shortly after, followed by a further scoring burst from James and Luke. Kildorrery’s transitional play through the lines was exceptional, moving the ball quickly and with purpose. By the 27th minute, the scoreboard read 1-15 to 0-06, reflecting a dominant opening half. Peter, James, and Luke all chipped in again before the half-time whistle sounded, leaving Kildorrery with an impressive 1-16 to 0-08 lead and the crowd buzzing after what could only be described as a carnival of hurling.

The second half, however, was to be an entirely different contest. Watergrasshill made a number of changes, particularly in their full-forward line, which would prove decisive. They emerged with renewed intent, registering early points from frees and pressure play. After seven minutes, they had found the net and added a point, with Kildorrery yet to score in the half.

On ten minutes, Kildorrery were reduced to 14 men following a double yellow card, further tilting momentum toward the visitors. Luke steadied nerves with an important point, while James Keating followed with a superb score after an excellent puck-out from Sean Kelly.

Watergrasshill struck for another goal in the 18th minute of the second half, drawing them firmly back into contention. From there to the final whistle, the teams traded points in a tense and physical battle. When Watergrasshill edged a point ahead deep into injury time, it seemed the outcome was decided, though Kildorrery came agonisingly close to snatching a dramatic finish, with a late opportunity flashing across the goalmouth and skimming wide of the post.

In the end, Watergrasshill emerged victorious by the narrowest of margins, 2-18 to 1-20.

Despite the disappointment, there were many positives for Kildorrery to take from the contest. The first-half performance showcased the team’s attacking potential, determination, and ability to take on top-level opposition. While lessons remain to be learned, the crowd left encouraged by the spirit shown and the strong passages of play throughout.

Kildorrery U14 V Mallow

What a contest this evening with both teams giving everything on a wet and difficult night. It was level at half time and the second half delivered a real battle with chances at both ends.

Kildorrery kept pushing, worked the ball well through midfield and defended with determination to secure a narrow and well earned victory.

The players showed real team spirit, great communication and steady improvement in their play.

It was a clear example of player development in action as individuals took on new roles, younger squad members grew in confidence, and combinations that have been practised at training came together under pressure.

Keep training and building on this performance, well done to all the girls. See you at training and on the pitch next week.
