Footballers Exit championship to neighbours Mitchelstown
With no time to rest on our Laurels we played Mitchelstown in our third football match of the round robin series. This match took place in a very well prepared Doneraile pitch. A draw would have secured a quarter final spot but that’s not how it was going to pan out on Saturday. Cork footballer Cathal O’Mahony inspired Mitchelstown to a local derby win over us in this winner-takes-all tie, O’Mahony scored 1-6 as Town ran out winners on a scoreline of 3-13 to 0-9.
Mitchelstown were tenacious in the opening exchanges opening the scoring with the first four points of the match including a two pointer from Michael Walsh before Cathal Harrington registered our first from a free. It was to be the first of four from Harrington in the first half which proved important in keeping us somewhat in touch with the well organised town outfit. A further brace of points from town and we trailed 6 points to 1 after 20 minutes. Harrington scored again from a free and when a sustained period of pressure led to another free in front of goals Harrington made it 6 points to 3 and we were starting to assert some level of pressure on the town defence. The sucker punch came right before half time when some good running from centre field by Mitchelstown meant that Michael Walsh was able to receive on the 21 to the left-hand side of the goal and he placed it in the side netting of our goal. What we thought was a wayward shot across the big square was to turn out far more important. With 27 minutes gone the score stood at 1-06 to 0-03 and this was to prove a vital moment for the match. A brace of points from Harrington and Shane Fitzgerald with town adding one more and at half time the score line didn’t reflect too badly with the score at 1 -07 to 0-05.
Town came out strongly again in the second half and opened the scoring. This was cancelled out by Shane Fitzgerald, but the next five minutes were to prove extremely important. A spilled ball in the square meant town goaled again and extended their advantage. Town showed a certain cleverness at this point through their own experience at this point as for a five-minute period they killed the momentum of play right down which meant that we were struggling from then on to reach any level of consistency or urgency. Ratcheting up further scores town now had the unassailable lead of 2-13 to 0-07 and Everything just felt so easy for them, and this reflected in the wides tally where they had very little wides in this half. Going into the last few minutes we managed to put two more on the board, but insult was added to injury when Cathal O Mahony goaled from the penalty spot as we were punished having been deemed to have brough the forward to the floor in an inappropriate manner.
This was the final act in what was a very disappointing day for all of us. Having had two great performances from this team in the series it was a pity to exit in such a manner. All credit is due to those players who gave everything this year and to the management and backroom team who guided the lads in this championship.
As we conclude on our year again, we reflect that it is not for us this year in both codes, but we will regroup and go again in 2026. Thanks to all.

Important that people have the correct footwear, moulded studs, Astro footwear or runners. We would ask all coaches to make sure this is the case.
Secondly the booking of the Astro will be reviewed weekly until we get the proper flow of training, capacity etc.
