Footballers show great heart to secure Draw

After both teams had good victories in the McCarthy Insurance Group Cork Premier Intermediate Football Championship first round, Gabriel Rangers and ourselves knew there was no more margin for error here.

At the end of this engaging duel in Belgooley, the sides could not be separated, and we were certainly content with a share of the spoils. This was a game full of twists and turns, with the tension on a knife-edge going into the closing stages as we trailed by three with sixty minutes up.

Heading into second-half stoppage time, Rangers held a three-point lead and after missing a few frees we clawed back the deficit in a dramatic conclusion.

It felt like a defeat for Gabriel Rangers and a victory for us and all credit to our team for refusing to throw the towel in, especially after an opening half which saw us better for large portions of the contest. We are both still standing and can still harbour some hope of making the knockout stages as we go into the Mitchelstown fixture with hope and a sense of encouragement. Starting without captain Conor Kent and club stalwart Peter o Brien we knew that we were going to have to dig deep and work hard for each other.

Rangers opened the scoring with some strong passages of play, but we gradually grew into proceedings and a well-taken effort by James Keating opened our account. James went on to score a two pointer and we were three points apiece at eight minutes. A well taken Anthony Crowley two pointer and a Cian Coughlan point and we were in the lead. Gabriel rangers came back into it and led seven points to 6 at twenty minutes. Another two pointer from James and we were tied again at eight apiece.

Our defensive line led by the young Sean O Grady, Sean Cunningham and Cathal o Sullivan stood up the challenge and showed maturity beyond their years in terms of their application to the defensive cause.

Points by Anthony Crowley and a two pointer by Harrington saw us lead at the break eleven points to nine.

At the resumption rangers were to have the better start and after 34 minutes, edged in front when they found the back of the net. After a super run they opened our defence, and maintaining his composure slotted home with a neat finish. We knew that Gabriel Rangers were going to look to build on that.

James Keating responded almost immediately with another point. At this juncture Gabriel rangers opened a four-point lead with a two pointer, but Anthony Crowley responded in kind with one of his own and the deficit was back to 2. Crowley was up for the challenge and this score was important to keep us in it.

When the chips were down, we showed great fighting spirit and with 48 minutes gone and us trailing by 2 Pierse Piggott was entered into the fray coming on for Richie hurley. This was to be an inspired substitution as Piggott who carried himself magnificently for his short spell and was ultimately to be the hero on the day as he goaled from a melee in the square after a long-range effort to the absolute jubilation of the players and the relieved crowd of supporters. This is how it finished out at 1-15 apiece and both happy to see it out.

We go on to play Mitchelstown now in the last match of this round robin series who secured victory against Dromtarriffe. If we can secure a draw or better, we go through. Its as simple as that. Let’s go for it lads.

Pitch update

Important that people have the correct footwear, moulded studs,Astro footwear or runners. We would ask all coaches to make sure this is the case.

Secondly the booking of the Astro will be reviewed weekly until we get the proper flow of training, capacity etc.

These bookings will be supervised. This is an exciting time for all of us and I know we will treat the Astro with the respect it deserves.

It is envisaged that the President of the GAA Jarlath Burns will visit the club to officially open the pitch in October.

New 200 club Launched!

Last week To Support the financing of the pitch we Launched our new 200 club whereby 200 families or individuals will be asked to donate five euro per week to the club to defray the costs of the project while also being able to enter a draw. This is going to be a tremendous development for the club and community, and we are looking forward to having the finished product shortly.
