Kildorrery open Hurling campaign with good win

Sunday saw our hurlers open their campaign with a successful start that was very well received by the supporters who made it to the match. On a bright and Sunny Sunday afternoon on an immaculately kept Buttevant pitch we took to the field minus too of our stalwarts Mikey Walsh and Shane Fitzgerald, both injured. This was the prudent thing to do to aid proper recovery and Dave Kelly and Fintan Daly assumed the mantle quite capably for the hour. The final score on the day was 3-20 to 0 11 to Kildorrery and while this reflects a very strong margin of victory which will serve us well in terms of scoring difference as we progress against our next opponents Mayfield the first and second half were two very different encounters. In fact we trailed by a point at the end of the first half. The watershed moments come at key moments in the match and Kildorrery despite having done well will have moments to reflect on from the first half.

We started strongly and within 10 minutes had opened a 3 points to one lead with Peter O Brian Luke Keating and Mceniry pointing. This punctuated with a meelin point leaving us leading by three points to one. Further points from Dave Kelly John O Connor and again from the prolific Mceniry who hurled superbly for the hour meant we were in a very strong position and the process and discipline by which the team were working to was working. A sloppy period in the midst of this half meant that squandered possession and an inability to impose our control meant that meelin were able to Rally and score Five of the last six scores of the half. When you play your first half an hours hurling of the championship you know there is going to be teething points and it will take time to settle in. This was the case but you felt with the likes of will fouhy hurling superbly along with Hunter and O Gorman winning vital ball at the break in midfield we could improve our second half performance and ultimately our execution of scores.

At half time The management team lead by Sean O Donnell reiterated the roles each of the team members had. The second half brought an air of expectation that we could impose ourselves earlier to see off the Meelin challenge. James Mceniry opened with a free in the second half which was met with a similar response from Meelin. Points from Mceniry ,Keating from a free ,John hunter and two from Peter O brien, one from a free and suddenly day light was emerging. This was followed by the team’s first goal per james mceniry after some great distribution from james keating. You could sense that the crowd were delighted for mceniry who hurled well throughout the match. At this stage finbar stapleton came on for Dylan kent. Kildorrrery led 1 16 to 0 10. Meelin added a point Further points from John Hunter and Luke Keating meant that by the 50th minute one felt the win was secure. Scoring difference would be important. Kieran Hurley was introduced for john o Connor but not after o connor goaled brilliantly to add to what was a solid contribution over his time on the field. Great to see john back. This was after Finbarr staple pointed. Cathal harrinton had come on for Dave Kelly. Dave contributed well throughout his time on the field and had contributed a point earlier. Harrington added a goal and a point that consolidated a very strong score from the side.

There were many positives from this encounter and elements for us to self-reflect on also but all in all great to get the campaign off to a positive start.
