At a chilly Brian Dillon’s venue, last Sunday evening, our Intermediate footballers scored a well-deserved 2-15 to 0-11 victory over Clonakilty, in the opening round of the Co. championship.

After a blistering opening seven minutes, Kildorrery, playing into a fresh breeze, had shot into a 0-6 to no score lead. Clonakilty had to wait until the tenth minute for their first score, a point from a free. Kildorrery replied with a point from James McEniry which was to be their second last score of the half, while Clon’ went on to control the game, finishing the half 0-9 to 0-7 ahead.

After the restart, Clonakilty missed two early goal chances, both efforts going wide, which seemed to take the sting out of their challenge. On the other hand Kildorrery got quickly into their stride and a probing ball into the Clonakilty goal-mouth was banged to the net by the alert James McEniry.

Kildorrery were in front again. Less than two minutes later a great run out of defence by James O’Sullivan, led to Tom Monaghan being well placed by Dave Kelly to punch to the net for a second goal. They were now four points clear. Peter O’ Brien stretched the advantage to five with a point in the forty first minute.

The west Cork side did pull back a point but by now were struggling to keep in touch. Kildorrery, now dictating terms, went on to add seven points to their tally in the last quarter, while Clonakilty could only manage a point in the same period.

And so with this all-round heart-warming second half performance our boys advanced to the next round. While there may be some room for improvement, this was a most encouraging display which augurs well for their future in the championship.
