Kildorrery Win Well as Dromina fail to take scoring chances
Cois Avon - The Corkman, Friday, September 2, 1988
Kildorrery 1-13 Dromina 1-5

Kildorrery regain the Avondhu junior hurling title which they last held in 1984 when they finished eight points ahead of Dromina at Buttevant on Sunday in a game that failed to provide the expected thrills and excitement, with the exception of the third quarter.

Assisted by the breeze in the first half, Kildorrery brought their pace and experience to bear and had moved into a n eight-point lead (0-9 0-1) by the interval. But in the first 10 minutes of the second half Dromina stepped up their performance and succeeded in reducing the margin to three points. The large attendance had justifiable reason at that stage to anticipate a hectic finish

But even during Dromina strong rallying efforts the difference between the teams was evident. In the face of the mounting Dromina pressure the real metal of the Kildorrery defence was demonstrated. The Dromina Forwards wasted several good scoring opportunities, even from places balls. It was obvious that they could not afford to do this if they were to take the title.

Dromina needed a steadier approach to capitalise on their opportunities and they were also guilty of bunching when more use of the open spaces towards the wings would have brought a better reward.

During the game the Kildorrery defence and indeed the whole team drew inspiration from the display of their centre half back Denis Fitzgerald. Solid during the first half he rose to great heights in the third quarter when the Dromina pressure was at its greatest. Around him during this period John Piggott and the rearguard of Will Duggan Dave Walsh and Pat Fitzgerald gave a tenacious performance.

While all the Kildorrery forwards contributed to the scoring tally the decisive score came in the 49th minute while after good use of the open spaces, Jimmy Monaghan goaled to increase their lead to six points (1-10 to 1-4). That score coming after a period of Dromina pressure, showed Kildorrery 's experience in withstanding the siege and then coming back to get in a telling blow.

At half time even when they trailed by 0-9 to 0-1 Dromina had a little cause for despondency because of the stiff breeze that has favoured Kildorrery. During the half hour's play the Dromina backs had shaped up competently, drawing inspiration from centre back Mick Brennan, full back Ned Shanahan, Donal Leahy and Micheal Collins. At midfield Donal Douglas and Ger Buckley played well but little was seen of the teams attacking ability.

With Douglas and Buckley playing a dominant role after the resumption and the wind proving a factor Dromina had a chance of coming to terms but the forwards were not able to make sufficient use of the excellent service that come their way.

And so after Dromina had promised to make an exciting game of it. Kildorrery hit back to lay firm claim to the title in what was a rather tame last quarter.

Kildorrery forced the pace in the early stages with points from Mossy O'Sullivan , Jimmy Monaghan and Denis Fitzgerald. As they continued to dominant with the wind behind them Dave Hannon from a sideline puck on the right wing, Dave Nolan (penalty) and Kevin Farrell put them 0-6 to nil ahead.

Ger Buckley of Drominas opening point in the 20th minute but Kildorrery were back on the warpath to increase their lead with point from Sean Keating, Aidan O'Connor and Dave Nolan (free) to send them into the break 8 pts in front.

Barry O'Connor who came on as a sub from Kildorrery marked the entry with a point shortly after the resumption but then Dromina enjoyed much more of the play that they had done earlier, began to make an all-out bid to change the trend of the game. A point by Ger Buckley was followed by a goal by Micheal O'Callaghan and Jack Bradley following with two points from frees the margin was down to three points and there was a buzz of anticipation around the grounds.

Still enjoying good possession the Dromina attack faltered at this stage, becoming over-anxious and erratic resulting in a number of wides from scorable positions. And so Kildorrery was left off the hook at a crunch period of the game.

With the outcome very delicately poised entering the last quarter Kildorrery made the vital break moving the ball into open spaces with Barry O'Connor cleverly laid on Jimmy Monaghan for the goal that increased their lead to six points.

It was obvious then that Dromina were up against it and so it proved in the later stages with Donie Douglas points from Dromina being negative by Kildorrery points from Barry O'Connor and Dave Nolan (2 from Frees) to put the issue beyond all doubts.

The teams were played onto the field by the Thomas Kent pipe band Fermoy, and a minutes silence was observed in memory of the late Pat Carroll, Dromina.

Kildorrery Win Junior 'A' Hurling Final

Kildorrery won their 8th North Cork final when they held on for an 8 pt win over Dromina, played at a very well prepared Buttevant pitch and excellently refereed by Willie Walsh N.T Kilworth. The Standard of hurling in this game was only fair

The String breeze that blew angle ways across the pitch might have added to the poor hurling. The teams were played out onto the field by the Thomas Kent all girls pipe band from Fermoy. Kildorrery played with the wind advantage in the first half and got off to a lightening start with a score from Mossy O'Sullivan after 30 seconds. This was followed by a succession of points for the winners. Jimmy Monaghan in the 4th minute, Denis Fitzgerald a point from a 65 in the 12th minute, Dave Hannon a point from a side line cut, Dave Nolan a point from a penalty in the 17th minute, Kevin Farrell a point in the 19th minute.

Dromina raised their first flag when stylish Ger Buckley pointed in the 20th minute. Kildorrery followed up with points from Sean Keating 22nd minute and Dave Nolan a free in the 28th minute, to leave the winners leading 0-9 to 0-1 at the interval.

The second half saw Kildorrery increase their lead with a point in the 32nd minute from substitute Barry O'Connor. Ger Buckley pointed for Dromina in the 34th minute. Mick O'Callaghan narrowed the gap with a Dromina goal in the 37th minute. Jack Bradley added 2 points from frees for the losers to leave a goal between the sides at the three quarter stage. Long serving Jimmy Monaghan, Kildorrery, put paid to Drominas chances. Like the opportunist that he is he took the chance that came his way and goaled. Barry O'Connor increased their lead with a point in the 49th minute. Donal Douglas had a point for the losers in the 49th minute. Dave Nolan added 2 points from frees for the winners in the 57th minute and 59th minutes to leave Kildorrery deserving winners.

The cup was presented by Liam Ware, Chairman of the North Cork Board, amid excited scenes to the Kildorrery captain Jimmy Monaghan. The Man of the match award also went to Kildorrerys Jimmy Monaghan.
